The Herderplatz has a significance for Weimar in the urban layout that goes beyond the purely historical. This special position is taken into account in the design. The apparent contradiction between historically justified homogeneity and necessary spatial differentiation of modern uses is subtly resolved by elevating a functional linear element (gutter) to steps at the central point of the square. These define different functions and connect them at the same time.

The traffic facilities will be reduced to the extent necessary for residents' traffic, but all traffic relationships - including delivery traffic - will still be possible. The carriageways will be levelled across the square, bordered only by gutters and coloured lines. This allows barrier-free access, but also unhindered crossing of the entire square for cyclists. At the same time, the contemporary ideal of 'shared space' is fulfilled for all road users.
The motif of the classic, historic stone (old) city will be reinforced again in the future by eliminating the trees on Jakobstraße. The tree at the fountain forms with this and the stairs to the school building a formative ensemble and is strengthened in its significance by the future unique position.
The need for seating in the square is met in the most secluded corner of the square at the fountain in front of the stairways with benches, which are partially shaded by the tree in this south-exposed location. In addition, the steps at the square will be used for free seating and storage.
The generous design of the square allows for all required uses. Whether markets, events or festivals, everything can be carried out functionally smoothly on the robust square with its unique backdrop.
