The open space planning of the residential quarters in Wieblingen East is characterized by communally used inner courtyards as well as private garden/terrace areas. Integration and communication are essential components of the planning.

The 2012 initiative "So wollen wir wohnen" (This is how we want to live) of the state of Baden-Württemberg and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Baden-Württembergischer Bausparkassen (Working Group of Baden-Württemberg Building Societies) thus awarded first place in the category "sustainable quarters" to GGH Heidelberg's Wieblingen-Ost residential complexes and open spaces project. The award ceremony took place on 23 November during the urban development congress in Stuttgart.
