The district of Essen-Haarzopf received a new shopping centre and at the same time a new local centre. The investor placed special demands on the outdoor facilities. In addition to the design quality, ecological aspects also played a special role. In addition to the greening of the facades and roofs, this also includes the use of rainwater for a near-natural open space design.
An area of around 1800 m² in the entrance of the shopping centre was terraced with gabions made of Ruhr sandstone. On the lowest level, at the low point of the terrain, a shallow water basin receives the rainwater from the adjacent roof areas. The area was planted with reeds, wild shrubs and grasses. Also in the other planting areas as well as in the green strips of the parking lot, high-maintenance roses and perennials were used. A large part of the roof areas was also extensively greened. Green roofs and rainwater basins were already specified in the development plan as compensation measures.
