The reason for the redesign of the open spaces is the planned renovation of the historic buildings and the additional new construction for the realization of the future location of the Protestant Church Office of Central Germany.
The arrangement of the existing buildings and the new building parts to be constructed create five clearly separated courtyard-like open spaces in the open spaces, which are also to be considered differently by their functions.
The area of the future main access borders directly on the public pedestrian area of Michaelisstrasse. The areas of the pedestrian area and the main access at the Collegium maius flow into each other here. Separated from Michaelisstrasse by the future new building, an inner courtyard with a square ground plan is created, enclosed by the old and new buildings. The eastern end between the new building and the wall on Furthmühlgasse will be formed by a garden courtyard with old chestnut trees worth preserving. Between the garden courtyard and the Studentengasse, at the level of the alley, lies the service yard with the possibility of delivery as well as a location for residual materials and a transformer. Between the old building and the natural stone wall along the northern property boundary on Furthmühlgasse, the existing small courtyard area will be preserved and used to accommodate bicycle parking.
