Illenau - The mental hospital (1920-1930 )

The Illenau near Achern is a former sanatorium and nursing home, which was built in 1842 in the classicist style under the direction of Heinrich Hübsch (Weinbrenner School). The institution was in operation until 1940, when it was converted by the National Socialists into a "Reich School for ethnic Germans". After the end of World War II, the facility was used as barracks for French forces until 1994. During discussions about its continued use, the proposal to continue the tradition of the psychiatric state hospital was rejected by the Stuttgart state government. Thereupon, the city of Achern acquired the Illenau in order to have a say in its further use.
In the meantime, the Illenau has become a cultural and administrative center with multifunctional use. Thus, part of the building complex was converted for residential use and sold, another part of the building is used as a technical town hall, the middle part creates as "Forum Illenau" premises for cultural and social events (music school, theater, meeting place), and the former stables became the "Illenauer workshops".
