Lohmühleninsel is a very popular leisure area and a highly frequented transit space for pedestrians and cyclists. This situation gave rise to a number of functional conflicts, which were initially resolved by developing a guiding idea for the entire southern Lohmühleninsel.
In principle, it was assumed that the island could only be "loaded" with further intensive uses to a very limited extent. A key objective was therefore to ensure that additional leisure facilities were sparingly, sensitively and well placed.
The visual linking of the open spaces was seen as closely related to the functional reorganization of the entrance areas. In order to improve orientation and everyday safety, vegetation was carefully thinned out and additional planting was only carried out in selected places.
