WESTPARK BOCHUM - a park above the city
With WESTPARK BOCHUM, one of the last large areas of Bochum's heavy industry has been returned to the city. Iron and steel were smelted at this site until the mid-1980s. After the works were closed down, what remained was an industrial wasteland terraced with railway embankments and slag heaps. Retaining walls and slag heaps planted with spontaneous vegetation dominated the landscape. The design of the park sharply defines the topography. On the uppermost level of the park, vistas are created outwards to the city quarters and to the landmarks of the region. On the inside, the view is directed towards the park centre: the "Jahrhunderthalle". It was converted into a concert hall for the Ruhrtriennale (architects: Petzinka, Pink und Partner, Düsseldorf). The park can be experienced on a 1.5 km long circular path. Pioneer trees such as birch and robinia have grown into sparse groves and dense bushes. Butterfly bushes and shrubbery complete the wilderness in the city. Accepting them as "industrial nature" and preserving them as far as possible was a guiding goal of the design.
The further construction phases for the completion of the Westpark were started in spring 2004, until about the end of 2014 the last areas of the park should be finished.
