The Hibernia industrial park was created on a former industrial site of approx. 43 ha. The new commercial settlements at the former coal mine and chemical site Hibernia were embedded in a park landscape linked to the urban district. An important guiding objective of the planning concept is "working in the park", which is aimed at with the help of an open space share of about one third (15 ha) of the total area.
The rainwater accruing from the paved areas and large roof landscapes is collected, stored in a rainwater retention system and discharged in a throttled manner to an open body of water.
The central design task was the design of a green corridor that runs through the entire width of the industrial park and can thus connect two city districts with each other. The design is dominated by a band of newly created water bodies with around 7,300 m² of water surface. This succeeds in transforming a dried-up tributary of the Emscher into a structurally rich watercourse again. At the same time, the "Große Gracht" of around 350 m in length creates the backdrop for a promenade between the historic gasometer, new businesses and adjacent residential areas.
