In the Nochten opencast mine south/southwest of the town of Weißwasser in Upper Lusatia, lignite has been mined since 1976. Vattenfall Europe Mining AG (VE-M) intends to extend the current mining of the opencast mine by mining area 2. The lignite extraction possible with the continuation of the Nochten opencast mine into mining area 2 will mainly secure the supply of the Boxberg power plant site and the Schwarze Pumpe refining plant, in accordance with the planned periods of use.
