Churches are meeting places, churchyards even more. But only if the atmosphere
this promotes. Here the congregation wants to signal openness and invite to community, churchgoers can stand together in loose groups, with contact to the world
around. But they also need security and support, their place may not lie ausge-
setzt.
This all fulfills the forecourt of St. Michael's Church in Plattling.
Three and a half meter high concrete light stelae separate the square from the sidewalk. One distinguishes the
inside and outside, but the access to the square is wide and always open.
The mighty brick facade of the church limits the courtyard to one side - two
column hornbeam blur the monotonous effect, on benches next to it can
enjoy the morning sun or the Ratsch after church comfortably extend.
