The regional school Caspar-David-Friedrich in Greifswald is an all-day school with approx. 250 pupils. The schoolyard includes a large and a small paved playground, a lawn with playground equipment, a paved bicycle parking area, a sports field with a 100-meter running track and a small playing field made of synthetic material as well as a shot-put and long jump facility. The schoolyard has a size of approx. 11,600 square meters.
The guiding idea for the design was the order of the diffuse entrance situations, the sensible division of the areas for different uses and the creation of different areas as a retreat or play area with a high quality of stay.
The break courtyards are paved with terracotta-coloured concrete stone. Small squares of amber-colored concrete block divide the area. The straight shapes of the break courts are interrupted by a sweep of blue clinker.
Metal benches, rubber seat cubes and two concrete seat walls that follow the curve of the clinker brick band serve as seating. The larger of the two seat walls consists of three rows of seats, so that it can also be used as an outdoor theater or classroom.
A greening of the schoolyard with trees, ground-covering shrubs, roses and lavender complete the overall picture.
