Der Klosterberg im Zentrum von Wipperfürth © 2009 Barthel
Wipperfürth has an urban ensemble of outstanding quality with its old town, St. Nicholas Church and the Wupper landscape and its high-quality buildings from the industrialisation era. Directly adjacent to the city centre is an extremely valuable urban area, both historically and as a green space, which has almost fallen into oblivion. The Klosterberg with the former Franciscan monastery and preserved remains of the city wall. In its exposed, partly with rocky slopes rising above the Wupper, the Klosterberg acts as an important landmark of the oldest city in the Bergisches Land.
The decades of neglect of the urban and ecclesiastical parts and the care not oriented to the historical value have, in combination with disfiguring fixtures and fences, led to the uninviting appearance of the Klosterberg today. Formerly open and usable areas, as well as key views of the town and countryside, have become almost entirely overgrown.
Following an inventory and assessment, draft guiding objectives were set out in 2012: Improvement of the connection to the city center, barrier-free routing, creation of a "city balcony" as a viewing area, restoration of visual relationships along a panoramic path, highlighting of the city wall and historical-topographical basic structures, revitalization of the monastery garden as well as optimization of guiding elements and equipment and implementation of the master plan light.
The ongoing planning is to be implemented with a focus on 2014, so that by 2015 Wipperfürth will have regained an attractive urban and green space with high lingering qualities, inviting visitors to stroll to the monastery and along the panorama path with its views of the town and landscape.
