The canoe slalom (white water rides) was included in the Olympic program for the first time in 1972.
For the Olympic canoe slalom, the world's first artificial slalom course was created in Augsburg, at the high outlet of the Lech, in the Lechauen on the edge of the Siebentischwald.
In preparation for the construction work, extensive model tests were undertaken. The model of the canoe slalom course, built on a scale of 1:22 and formed from plasticine, is around 23 m long.
Around 30,000 spectators can be seated at the 600 m long and approx. 12 m wide course. Of the grandstand seats, 4,000 were covered at the time of the Olympics.
The grandstand steps (standing steps) have a tread height of 15 cm and a depth of between 40 and 400 cm. They are designed as earth grandstands with step edges made of bongossi wood and match the contour lines exactly.
The canal is ideally suited for swimming. Unlike torrential mountain streams, there are no sharp stones in the artificial canoe slalom on which one could seriously injure oneself.

Listed building:
The Olympic canoe course was entered as a listed building in the Bavarian Monument List in 2018.

Olympic canoe route becomes part of the Unesco World Heritage:
The Augsburg water management was awarded the distinction of Unesco World Heritage in 2019.
The Hochablass and the ice canal are among the 22 individual objects with which Augsburg is represented in the list of the Unesco World Heritage.
