In the book Noa Noa (Scent), Gauguin describes his life in Tahiti. The Noa Noa Garden stages the inner conflict between the "banality of the European" and the search for the "original".
The basic structure of the garden is based on a Tahitian tattoo. The pruned yews make reference to French garden art. They refer to the European culture that Gauguin wanted to escape, but which remained ever-present for him due to the French colonial administration and missionaries.
The choice of perennials refers to Gauguin's colorful pictorial language. As a painter, he sought direct, undisguised expression: "Everything in the landscape confused and dazzled me. Coming from Europe, I was always unsure of my choice of colors; I was tormented by superfluous concerns. Yet it was so easy to naturally place a blue and a red on my canvas. I was enchanted by the shimmering gold shapes in the streams - why did I hesitate to pour all this gold and all this sunshine onto my canvas?
