The new building of the research institute is embedded in the spacious urban green spaces of the district 'Heide-Süd'. The complex, consisting of 2 structures, is enclosed by a sheet steel façade that opens to the west and east and links the inner courtyard as a linear intermediate space with the surrounding open spaces. The expanse of the green spaces of 'Heide-Süd' with large trees and plantings are condensed in the narrow band between the building structures. Compressed' nature is represented by hornbeams, which, in close connection with the architecture, are on the one hand a tree and on the other hand a design element, further solitary shrubs and an underplanting of grasses and perennials.
The entrance and recreation area is characterised by a dark paved surface, which contrasts with the light-coloured metal façade. In keeping with the strictly geometric architecture, the parking spaces and delivery areas are also designed as functional units with straight lines and closely linked to the requirements of the building structure. An outdoor storage area for consumables, equipment, waste containers and as a bicycle shelter is located in the area of the western open spaces, the steel structure of which is faced with a façade of aluminium composite panels.
The flat roofs of all buildings are extensively greened in order to make optimum use of rainwater retention, climatic effects and the possibilities of ecological compensation
