Before the redesign, the Heidenfahrt Rhine bank was characterised by overlapping usage interests. The local recreation area, popular in itself, was in a state in need of overhaul. Within the framework of an open and cooperative planning process, the area was redesigned first by means of a framework plan and later with an open space plan.
The concept provided for an order of the existing uses. New promenades and sunbathing lawns were created along the waterfront. The Rhine bank zones and the mouth of a flowing ditch were designed close to nature. A new footbridge and a bastion clad in natural stone have created new recreational zones. A desolate permanent camping site was transformed into a seasonal camping site integrated into the landscape with an adjoining beer garden.
The project was awarded the Gottfried Kühn Prize for landscape architecture in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland in 2004.
