With the redesign of the green space on the Lippe, a new, openly designed river park was created, which leads from the city centre along the river into the landscape.
The two different levels, the park level and the level of the river, which is approx. 5 m lower, are linked with two new, concisely running paths and thus allow exciting, constantly new and changing perspectives on the Lippe, the opposite bank and the city edge to emerge.
The park was given a longitudinal basic structure consisting of a band of benches, hedge bands and rows of narrow-crowned trees along the northern edge, a central open meadow area, the sunbathing lawn and a near-natural band along the river with groups of trees and lines of sight to the Lippe.
Direct access to the water was created via two sets of steps and seating steps, which create attractive areas to spend time by the water. The areas adjacent to the accesses, on the other hand, retained their river-accompanying riparian fringe and can develop close to nature.
North of the adjacent area, a new residential area is to be built in the medium term, the park was therefore designed so that the new residents can make good use of the park and get an unobstructed view of the river, but are still disturbed as little as possible by the other park users.
A coloured asphalt surfacing was chosen for the paths, which is simple and robust, easy to walk and drive on in all weathers and can withstand some flooding. A high quality of stay was achieved with robust, long seating blocks made of exposed precast concrete along the paths.
A park was thus created between the city and the landscape, which on the one hand improves the link to the landscape and on the other creates a place with a high quality of stay.
