The Seseke lies in the area of former mining activities on the northern edge of the Ruhr area. It was technically developed over a length of 19.4 km, diked over a large stretch and used for open wastewater drainage over a length of 17.4 km. After the subsidence of the mines and the rehabilitation of the drainage system, there is no longer any need to maintain the technical development condition, so that the watercourse could be ecologically redesigned.
Particular emphasis was placed in the planning on the restoration of the flowing water habitat and the ecologically continuous connection of the tributaries, from which recolonisation is to start. The Seseke is to be developed as a guiding landscape structure and biotope axis in the Seseke Landscape Park (green corridor G). In order to ensure the necessary flood protection for the neighbouring towns, large-scale retention areas have been planned.
An accompanying cycle and footpath turns the watercourse into an attractive recreational and adventure area. Thus a linkage of ecology and the requirements of the adjacent living humans succeeds.
