The design idea is a square design that combines both halves of the square across Eppinghofer Straße into a single unit. This is achieved through a uniform choice of materials for the paving, a uniform type of tree with special growth and the positioning of the trees in a continuous grid, a continuous lighting concept and the installation of "long benches", which structure the space, guide and direct pedestrian movements and bring quality of stay to the square.
In the result, the station forecourt appears as a design unit. In a "square carpet", which is set off from the facades by a small paving frieze, there are zones in the same dark anthracite grey colouring, but with a different laying pattern or stone format, separated by a stainless steel edge. The resulting alignments and lines are accentuated by the tree positions, seating walls, and light fixture locations; the design "jumps" over the street. The fountain remains in place.
For disabled or mobility-impaired people, the walkways will be marked by color-contrasting guidelines; the surface will also vary in roughness. This functional element is an integral part of the design, in that a surrounding, light-colored frieze separates the small paving zone at the building from the square pavement.
Place lighting is provided by light stelae in the central square area. The steles are round and have a light point height of 5 meters.
