The so-called "Research and Development Mile" is a building block of the urban redevelopment project "Geestemünde takes to the water". The formerly inaccessible harbour area has been transformed into a promenade and links the swing bridge on Borriesstraße with the new offshore safety training centre at the flooded dry dock.

High-quality surfacing, furnishing and lighting elements provide the attractive environment for further investment decisions. Paths connect the public open spaces on the redeveloped quays with Köperstrasse in the Geestemünde district.
The zoning characteristic of the Havenwelten also characterises the appearance of the surfaces here: Smooth concrete slabs in the main movement zone, rough old cobblestones along the quays and between strips of slabs and buildings.
The central path axis is flanked with benches made of large oak beams as a reminder of the adjacent wooden harbour. When changing direction, it expands into squares with trees and long benches.

Exhibits line the furniture axis and provide information about the surrounding research institutes and their work. Elements for the ship's supply and a lighting system are also integrated into the furnishing axis. A landing stage for the harbour tour now also opens up the research and development mile to tourists.
