In the course of the necessary renovation of the entire roof terrace area due to structural damage, the private apartment owners decided to restore the area only in small parts with slabbed surfaces and to now green essential areas. This decision was also made against the background of the high solar radiation and the resulting high light and heat reflection of the coverings, which could lead to uncomfortably high temperatures of over 40 ° Celsius in summer on the terrace and a strong heating of the adjoining living rooms and bedrooms.
We developed a spatial staggering of different planting and surfacing levels with the owners, with the aim of achieving different intensively usable lounges and planting areas with optimal use of the space available and the microclimatic conditions (sun and shade areas over the course of the day).
From the coordination with the building statics, the construction management of the redevelopment trades and the time windows of the school holidays (numerous schools and daycare centers in the immediate access area), a precisely adjusted overall concept was created, which the three contracted construction companies implemented in just a few days.
The use of ground-level extensive planting areas, which were created by seeding, raised beds of aluminum edging with woody plants, grasses and herbs and a water basin made of edged V2A steel.
The planting was equipped with an automated irrigation system.
The photos show the very well developed planting in the first year after the new planting. The high temperature peaks on the roof area in the summer months have been reduced and the quality of stay has increased significantly as a result. The vegetation areas and the water basin also contribute to increased evaporation, which sustainably improves the microclimate.
