Award in the competition Gardens of the Year 2017!
The narrow garden in the urban area of Cologne has a special shape: With a width of about 7.50 m, it has a length of about 43 meters. The garden adjoins a renovated old building in a mid-terrace location.
Different uses were accommodated in the planning in different garden spaces, hedges serve the subdivision and bring the garden in harmony. Representative and private, modern and classic, calm and stimulating. A water basin takes up the axis of the living room window, another axis runs in the form of a path to the rear seating area. Through the choice of plants and materials, the spaces again form a unity: woody plants and perennials with green and red foliage, as well as lava basalt in the form of path paving, tread plates and edgings run through the garden. The preserved, old tree population creates a framework for the new design of the outdoor space.
The narrow garden in the urban area of Cologne has a special shape: With a width of about 7.50 m, it has a length of about 43 meters. The garden adjoins a renovated old building in a mid-row location and is completely enclosed by other gardens.
Triad: Three different parts of the garden were combined and arranged in the planning. Prestigious and shady, stimulating and sunny, extrovert and sociable. Directly at the house there is a terrace in an elevated position above the garden. A representative part of the garden adjoins here. A water basin with a baffle takes up the axis of the living room window, where the shady air under the existing trees can be enjoyed after an infusion in the in-house sauna. A band of Japanese forest grass adds lightness to the water basin. The existing amber tree with white panache leaves brightens up the garden section. Another axis runs in the form of a path to the rear seating area.
Hidden behind offset yew hedges is a generous lawn area that provides space for sun loungers. Here the evening sun can be enjoyed between fragrant plants. The old wall with exposed clinker brick on the boundary of the property was included in the planning. It is now planted with Wisteria siensis 'Alba' through a vine system. The planting also picks up the color of the old wall and thus creates a link between nature and architecture.
The rear garden section houses a garden shed for furniture and tools, a seating area with barbecue corner far from the house. Here can end in peace and quiet lue, sociable summer evenings. The outdoor floor lamp gives the seating area the character of a living room. Yew hedges are also used here and conceal the garden house and a compost.
Through the choice of plants and materials, the individual spaces again form a unity: woody plants and perennials with green and red foliage, as well as regional lava basalt in the form of path paving, tread plates and edgings run through the garden. The preserved, old tree population creates a framework for the new design of the outdoor space.
