To accompany the 2017 State Garden Show, parts of Bad Lippspring's city center were redesigned. The integration of the River Jordan represented a significant opportunity for the redesign of the market square. At the same time, the aim was to provide an open-use square area for events and festivals.
The uniqueness and quality of life of Bad Lippspringe is created, among other things, by a multitude of springs and rivers that characterize the townscape and run through the town as 'blue ribbons' from northeast to southwest. The flowing ribbons of watercourses in Bad Lippspringe are a source of inspiration and a typical feature of the town. They are atmospheric inspiration and a practical design principle for the market square on the River Jordan. A uniform surface covering of non-directionally laid concrete block paving gives the square a coherent appearance. Striking flat bands of slabs interpret the curves of the watercourses. These bands are partly designed as seating steps, lead as a semi-circular bridge base to the opposite bank and play around the small Jordan River like a whirlpool. The ribbons, the square topography and the position of the trees naturally divide the square into three areas: from the tree-lined promenade with elms in front of the houses with stores and restaurants to the open and freely usable market area and the quiet area directly on the water. Loosely spaced willows provide light shade for the shore area and create an open area with a high quality of relaxation. A water feature integrated into the surface at the same level enlivens the center of the square without restricting its diverse usability. The ecological enhancement and design of the river bed with a planting of grasses in front of the Jordan balcony is expected to take place in the coming years.
