Memorial Synagogue Square Lviv

In the Jewish quarter of the Old Town of Lviv, two synagogues and a school building were destroyed by the National Socialists. The density of the traces, their present perceptibility and their former spatial integration vary. This variance is translated into three different spatial situations and atmospheres. Three different mental approaches to the history and gravity of the place are created. The destroyed buildings are traced in a differentiated manner and elaborated as places of independent identity: Carefully developed authentic ruins and a living, green place of dialogue, reflection and remembrance.
After several years of planning, intensive discussion and an international appeal for donations, the northern section, on the sites of the "Golden Rose" synagogue and the former Beth Hamidrash (Torah school), was completed in 2016.
