In 2003, art collector Christian Boros purchased the air-raid shelter on Reinhardtstrasse in Berlin-Mitte in order to have it converted into a place where he can live with his family as well as with his art collection.
The design of the roof surface of the bunker provides for a continuation of the rooms of the penthouse into the outdoor space. Thus, roof gardens and roof terraces of different sizes alternate according to the rooms around the penthouse, which is centrally located on the roof surface of the bunker. The different uses of the rooms such as lounge, living room, kitchen, bathroom and sauna are continued into the exterior space in the form of different terraces. The exterior living areas are bordered by lush gardens. A spatial division of the surrounding open spaces is created. Semi-transparent screens made of hornbeam take up the lines of the window panels and form the green walls of the terraces. The leading shrubs, rock pear and various types of hydrangea, are complemented by a lush perennial planting.
