In order to protect the Offenstetten district of the town of Abensberg from flooding after heavy rainfall events, two rainwater retention areas integrated into the landscape were implemented.
The decentralized retentions were created on the one hand as an extensive retention area on meadows in the south of Offenstetten, as well as a small retention area in the interior of the village in direct connection to a protected landscape feature.
Here, adapted to the respective given space, the largest possible retention volume was created with simultaneous sensitive handling of the local conditions.
In close coordination with the specialist authorities, it was therefore possible to achieve improved flood protection while at the same time integrating or upgrading areas that are valuable from a nature conservation point of view. Legally protected biotopes, such as meadow breeding areas, could be permanently secured and expanded.
