The boarding school of Herlufsholm in Zealand presents itself as an ensemble of a small campus with historical, listed buildings in a landscape context. The Røde Plads represents the center of the facility, meeting place and center of school life.
In 2014, Realdania launched a competition to redesign this central plaza area. The task was to create a new center that would know how to connect old and new buildings alike. The central idea of the design is a synthesis of a stone plaza as an agora for meeting and communication, which creates a context to the adjacent landscape through topography and tree plantings.
The project was completed to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the school. It restores the historic coherence of the site and sets distinctive accents for the future life of the school.
