On the site of the former freight station "An der Wittenberger Bahn", a new residential quarter is being developed, which is characterised by living close to the city centre with a high quality of life: The IlmenauGarten. At the heart of this development, with a direct view of the Ilmenau, is the Wasserplatz. Due to its award-winning central location between the water, the railway station and the historic old town, the water square is visible in its function as an inner-city junction and radiates positive effects on residents and tourists through its design.
This main focus is supported in terms of design by the cross-square step system, which is characterised by horizontally running seating steps made of granite and overcomes the height difference with the help of steps on both sides, in order to integrate itself into the existing overall picture and to ensure a dynamic upgrading. The ramp hidden between the lawn steps ensures a barrier-free ascent.
The concept of the water square takes up the idea of mixed use of the new residential quarter for seniors, students and social institutions, offers a communal meeting place for young and old and creates a place of identification in the center of Lüneburg, which contributes functionally and aesthetically to an open space planning upgrade of the neighborhood.
