The schoolyard of the Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium will receive a central large movement area made of concrete block paving. This is predominantly level and is bordered by an open drainage channel. The water is drained off via courtyard drains in the open gutter. The examination by In B4-PLAN Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH, which was commissioned with the pipe planning, showed that the existing rainwater pipes can continue to be used, as the amount of rainwater to be discharged does not differ significantly from the current situation.
A frame of mosaic paving mediates between the listed school buildings and the core area of concrete paving. As far as possible, accesses are made barrier-free (e.g. access to the gymnasium). Retreat and functional niches are attached to this large centre of the open spaces. There is an alcove with exercise facilities and a bouldering wall, a terrace in front of the cafeteria, a table tennis corner and a "green classroom". The 40 bicycle parking spaces are compactly arranged and covered. Seating and lounge areas are designed and arranged differently. All existing trees will be preserved, 10 new ones will be planted. Details can be found in the planting list. Centrally, 3 green round islands are created, with circular, coloured seating.
The "Green Classroom" of the Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium is planned as a meadow garden with fruit trees and a small enclosure (metal bar fence). In the center is a table-bench-object with about 30 seats for students and teachers. The courtyard in the 2nd school building, which cannot be used due to the lack of escape routes, will simply be planted as a shade garden. It is to be upgraded in a visually appealing way. A use cannot be established for this courtyard. The existing containers for the Abi classes and the equipment storage will not be changed in the concept. The existing enclosures of wall bases and wire mesh fences will also be retained as is. The schoolyard lighting will be renewed by pole lights.
Preparation and preliminary concept
In preparation for student participation, a preliminary concept was developed and intensively coordinated with the school board, school and specialist departments. In a workshop with students of the Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium an opinion was captured and ideas / comments for the planning were collected. The results of the workshop were used by Büro Fugmann Janotta to put together a poster documenting the survey with photos and commentary plans and showing a preliminary draft with sample images. The content of this poster was agreed by telephone with the Green Spaces Office and with the school management at a personal meeting. The poster was displayed in a central location in the school building, some students and parents were interviewed again and the draft was also presented and discussed in the general conference of teachers. The school summarized the results of the voting in a statement. The following contents requested in the participation process could be considered in the preliminary planning: Movement area for 500 students, outdoor area in front of the cafeteria, barrier-free access to the cafeteria and gymnasium, sufficient seating and lounge areas for students, possibility to load and unload something in the courtyard into a car, bicycle racks for 30 bicycles, green classroom with 25-30 seats, table tennis tables, fitness equipment, movement game offers, bouldering wall, basketball, green island and trees, containers preserved in their old position, preservation of the existing apple trees in the former school garden and niches for retreat.
