John Locke estate Redesign of outdoor facilities and play areas as part of a residential complex refurbishment

As part of the gradual structural refurbishment of the large housing estate, the outdoor facilities will also be revised and partially redesigned between 2014 and 2020. The original planning from the 1960s will essentially be retained with regard to the pathways and the planting concept.



Important locations will be singled out and specifically upgraded to create compact open spaces with a high quality of stay. The design principle for the John-Locke-Siedlung, the image of the 'blue ribbon', will be incorporated in the form of blue round benches. The existing footpaths will be differentiated into superordinate and subordinate routes and the lighting will be adapted accordingly.

Planting areas close to the buildings will be completely redesigned once the building construction work is complete. The existing footpath connections will be converted into a seamless, barrier-free network.



The play areas in the courtyards will be redesigned or expanded. Each playground will be given an individual theme, such as "In the circus", "By the sea" or "In the garden".



The tree and planting concept aims to preserve the existing trees as far as possible, as they are a defining element of the development. Extensive planting is only planned for the parking spaces, which will be screened by tree grids in the future through the partial conversion of vacant parking spaces into tree grids.
