The monastery gardens are part of the largely preserved overall complex of the Cistercian monastery of Neuzelle, which was founded in the 13th century.
Courtyards, other monastery buildings, farm buildings, gardens and cemeteries are grouped around the cloister and the monastery church as the functional center of the complex.
The orchard is part of the baroque convent garden and was designed in its original form by the teachers' seminary in the 19th century. It was used for teaching purposes and to provide food for the seminarians. The oldest surviving apple trees date from the late 19th and early 20th century and have been identified as Goldparmäne, Baumanns Renette and Zuccalmaglios Renette. Young apple and pear trees of these and other strong-growing historical varieties were planted to supplement the stock. The area was laid out as an orchard and initial plantings of early flowering plants were planted. Nesting boxes for cavity-nesting birds were hung up as a biological plant protection measure.
