The memorial to Otto Lilienthal was erected after a previous competition on behalf of the citizens of Lichterfeld based on designs by the sculptor Peter Christian Breuer (1856-1930) and was inaugurated on June 21, 1914. The garden monument Eduard-Spranger-Promenade - in the northern section of which the monument is located - was laid out in this section as a formal ornamental area and city park to showcase the monument.

The larger-than-life bronze figure of Icarus stands on a more than five-meter-high natural stone pedestal with a square base. This is constructed from a layer of granite blocks and further pyramid-shaped layers of sandstone above. With its high plinth, the monument appears earthbound and monumental when viewed from close up, but from a distance it appears elegant, with a metal sculpture of great lightness.

During the restoration, the monument was cleaned, further weathering and corrosion were stopped and damage was repaired. Missing parts were added and technically unsuitable materials from earlier measures were removed.

The monument is once again in an appropriate and representative condition.
