Bonn's Rhine embankment is characterised by the striking height difference between the city and the river promenade. This is formed as a wall over long stretches of the Rhine promenade. The approach to the city edge and the view of the lower promenade and the expanse of the Rhine make up the special charm of the riverbank situation. Striking places are the "city balconies", especially the elevated bastion of the old city fortifications.

In the northern section, the city lies on plateaus, which are separated from each other by cut streets.

The Rhine promenade has a direct relationship to the water due to the small difference in height to the Rhine.

The aim of the design is to stage the city edge and to develop it into a unique selling point of the city of Bonn with a high recognition value.

Examples of this are the redesign of the city edge at the "Opera Plateau" with recreational areas or the "Rhine Terraces" as a new city edge of the "Beethoven Plateau".

The continuous linearity of the promenade is strengthened by staircases and long seating elements in the promenade and along the shore. Long floating platforms enrich the promenade with special situations on the water.

Small squares at the entrances to the city structure and rhythmize the promenade.
Paving strips running parallel to the bank extend from the squares in the promenade to the city center and mediate the height difference between the city, promenade and Rhine. The elevated city is thus linked to the banks of the Rhine. At the squares, free, loosened tree positions interrupt the strict, linear tree position of the riverside promenade and lead into the city.
