In Bielefeld-Bethel, the new Bohnenbachpark is being created by opening up the Bohnenbach stream and creating extensive green spaces on an area of approx. 35,000 m². The construction measure is being implemented in two construction phases as part of the state development programme "Stadtumbau West".
In contrast to the adjacent urban space, the Bohnenbachpark is not criss-crossed by a continuous network of trees. Contrary to conventional expectations of a park, the ambience of Bohnenbach Park, apart from a few groups of individual trees, is characterised by open, light spaces and lawns. Another essential component of the design is the opening up of the previously piped Bohnenbach stream. Along the naturally meandering course of the stream lies a long, north-south oriented promenade, which also forms the backbone of the park. It separates the necessary functional areas of the adjacent buildings from the park space. The planned opening of the Bohnenbach offers a unique opportunity to connect the Bethel district with its surrounding area via a green artery (the Bohnenbach Park).
