The project "Mitten in Lübeck" includes the central north-south axis of the city centre with pedestrian zone and the city squares Klingenberg and Schrangen. These areas were shaped in the 60s and 70s under the premise of a car-oriented city. The aim of Lübeck's urban planning was to upgrade and return this area to the context of Lübeck's old town streets. A use and identity was to be formulated for the squares in the first place. The central public space in the World Heritage City of Lübeck extends north-south from the Koberg to the Klingenberg. The connecting streets between the two north-south axes Breite Straße/Sandstraße and Königstraße form a ladder. In terms of design and material, the two axes are closely linked. The street spaces are designed in the classical European street profile and are rolled out as an at-grade carpet of the reddish granite typical of the old town. The central lane accommodates the main flow of pedestrians or public transport, the marginal strips / pavements are reserved for window shopping or open-air gastronomy. The squares Koberg, Schrangen, Markt and Klingenberg each have their own history, meaning and thus use. The Kohlmarkt functions as a public transport hub in the old town. The squares are treated in the same way in terms of the materiality of the floor covering, only the format, laying direction or surface treatment give them a subtle independence. Equipment and use underline their respective history and meaning.
