In the west of Dresden, a new elementary school with after-school care and sports hall was built with sustainability in mind. The site is located on a north-facing slope. The two buildings are accessed at the same level via a shared courtyard. This contains the break areas, which consist of both paved and unpaved surfaces. The paved courtyard, which stretches between the buildings, is a place of arrival, connection and recreation at the same time. All the intensive play areas, such as the climbing area and mud playground, are arranged under a light canopy of trees. An accessible seating wall separates the two materialities and also offers the opportunity to sit down.
At the transition to the recreational green areas, some of the rainwater is collected in a small stream and directed to the open rainwater retention areas to the north. These areas create a wide variety of habitats and are also a backdrop and research space for the pupils. There is also a reading garden in the break area, which can also serve as a classroom in the greenery, equipped with two blackboards.
Close to the sports hall there is a football pitch and a 50-metre running track with an integrated long jump facility.
