As part of the Parklets or SchöneFlächen project, five street-side parking spaces were used alternatively for three weeks in late summer 2020.
The ideas collected in an ideas workshop with citizens were further developed by us and translated into an overarching concept. The connecting link was a stable wooden frame measuring approx. 2.5x5x2m, which also represented the public area of 12 square meters as a spatial dimension and allowed for flexible interior design. The five SchönenFlächen refer to different aspects and roles of public space, which are currently occupied by stationary traffic: Communication, meeting place, recreation, movement, exchange, green space, political discussion.
From 5 to 26 September 2020, residents were able to take part in sporting activities, talk to each other, relax in a hammock, sniff basil, swap things, admire items of laundry or simply think about how much space cars take up in the city.
The project was implemented with low material costs and the support of volunteers including hochC employees. It was part of a series of projects in Schöneberg Nord dedicated to climate protection and the transport and mobility transition.
