The commercial site at Zossener Strasse 55-58 is located in a lively neighborhood in Berlin's Kreuzberg district. In the course of adding missing buildings and renovating the existing buildings, the open spaces will also be redesigned to improve the ecological and social aspects. The design concept primarily takes into account the themes of sustainability, social competence and the reference to the historical context of the site.
The redesign envisages partially unsealing existing areas and creating recreational spaces for users.
The arrangement of existing and new buildings results in courtyards of different sizes, which are accessed via passageways. The open space will have different sized, geometric planting islands, which will be designed as meadow areas with tree plantings or planted with perennials, grasses and shrubs.
They are designed either as raised beds or as ground-level plantings. Among other things, they serve as sunbathing lawns and retreats with table seating areas and provide places to work outdoors or linger during breaks.
All access routes within the open spaces are planned to be barrier-free. The surface of the existing asphalt will be resurfaced. Other footpaths and driveways will be constructed using an unbound construction method with concrete blockwork. Careful handling of the existing surfaces and preservation of the existing asphalt is considered sensible from a sustainability perspective and contributes to reducing construction waste.
