Medieval villages with fortified churches characterise the landscape of the Transylvanian Saxons northwest of the Carpathians. Until now, there has been no holistic planning approach; the focus has been on a few individual projects. With a development strategy for this fortified church landscape, the foundation stone was laid for a sustainable future of the rural area that is compatible with the cultural landscape. The model project serves to prepare Romania for the EU and accompanied Sibiu on its way to becoming the Capital of Culture 2007.
