The outdoor facilities are part of the still largely preserved overall complex of the Cistercian monastery of Neuzelle, which was founded in the 13th century. Around the cloister and the monastery church as the functional centre of the complex are grouped courtyards, other monastery buildings, farm buildings, gardens and cemeteries. In terms of planning, the guiding principle of simple open spaces was followed for the squares, courtyards and green areas. The surrounding buildings and walls determine the spatial structure. The orphanage courtyard was used in the Baroque period as a farmyard for the slaughterhouse, the brewery and the enclosure buildings. Today it is used as a schoolyard. Since large areas of the courtyard are paved with historic fieldstone, some areas have been mixed with porphyry paving that is easier to walk on. A new stage roundel with surrounding seating steps provides opportunities for outdoor festivities. During breaks, it is used by students to sit and play.
