The Gatow fields are surrounded by forest and residential areas on the western outskirts of Berlin. The expanse of this clearing contrasts with a differentiated border design of city, forest and field. The new city peripheral park is characterized by the structures of the airfield to the east and the relics of the shooting range to the west. Against this backdrop of recent cultural landscape history, the Gatow fields will become a model for a 21st-century urban fringe park: local recreation, crop cultivation and nature conservation will be embedded in a clear design framework, with the garden and landscaping areas adapting flexibly to demand. The expanse of the clearing is the defining theme of the design. There are three clearing areas: the undirected expanse of the open meadow landscape in the north-east is differentiated from the field landscape by the field promenade. The fields are divided by woodland and field margins. In the southeast, the airfield with the structures of the runways determines the clearing pattern. This creates diversity within a large-scale form and texture. Staggered vegetation, the degree of development and the intensity of maintenance determine the characteristics of the clearings.
