The urban open space around the former main post office "Hühnerposten" represents one of the most important central squares in Hamburg.
It is surrounded by Hamburg's main railway station, the historic
building of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe and the shopping miles Mönckeberg- and Spitalerstraße.
The building is now an architectural monument and houses the Hamburg Central Library and various office uses.
With the conversion to an office building, an underground car park was created on the former
post office courtyard and the railway tracks, which forms the basis for the new forecourt.
Few, but powerful elements determine the shape of the square and give priority to the effective facades.
Plant elements made of corten steel with Chinese reed lead onto the forecourt and at the same time separate it from the street space. The sculpture "Man and Woman" by the artist Stephan Balkenhol achieves a long-distance effect and
underlines the importance of the square as a junction and prelude to the city centre.
