In the immediate vicinity of the historic old town of Lüdinghausen - between the Renaissance castle of Lüdinghausen and the Vischering castle, the Franciscan convent and the St. Antonius grammar school - there is an open natural and cultural space in a unique water landscape consisting of two branches of the river Stever. In recent history, the area was mainly used for agriculture. Today, it offers great potential for use due to its location in the centre of the town.
With the Regionale 2016 project "WasserBurgenWelt", the castle-water landscape ensemble was further developed. With the new "StadtLandschaft", the town of Lüdinghausen wants to connect the two castles with a park and thus create an attractive environment with high-quality pathways.
The design by JKL - Junker Kollegen Landschaftsarchitektur was awarded first prize in the competition held in 2014. Based on the model of the classic landscape park, JKL designed a spacious park with self-evident spatial staging.
In 2016, we were commissioned by the city of Lüdinghausen with the services of the work phases 6 to 8 HOAI for the realization of the StadtLandschaft. The first of three construction phases was completed in March 2018. By the end of 2019, the entire StadtLandschaft will have been redesigned according to JKL's plans.
The new park takes a landscape approach. Generous meadow areas with large
established trees are crisscrossed by paths made of natural stone and water-bound path surfaces, creating functional connections to the city and surrounding countryside. The gentle topography of the waterscape provides varied views. Some planting islands with native woody plants were added and structure the park. The main path is equipped with pole lights, benches - partly arranged under the trees - offer places to stay. Near the St. Antonius-Gymnasium the retention area of the Stever was extended by a dam relocation. Here, a green classroom could thus be created.
In autumn 2019, the second construction phase was completed, the third and final construction phase will be implemented in 2020.
