A TRAFFIC AREA BECOMES A CITY SQUARE
Axel-Springer-Platz in Hamburg was extensively remodeled as part of the bus acceleration project. The new road layout has allowed the side areas to be significantly enlarged - and the face of Axel-Springer-Platz has been transformed from a pure traffic area into a square with a high quality of stay and a strong identity.
The square is bordered by the Hohe Bleichen BID, the Passagenviertel BID, the Neuer Wall BID and the area around Fleetinsel. The Stadthöfe on Stadthausbrücke in the immediate vicinity are also opening their doors to pedestrians. Axel-Springer-Platz is now becoming a strong link in this cluster.
STONE CASTINGS AND STAIRS
Light-colored granite surfaces, which are echoed in the neighboring areas, and planted stone clods peeling out of the ground form a calm framework and contribute to a uniform cityscape. The towering Axel Springer building and the existing columnar oaks give the square its own character and are reinforced by a calm material composition for furniture and surfaces. Extensive, steppe-like plantings of grasses and perennials move with unexpected lightness in the wind. The full bloom in spring and summer brings a piece of nature back to the city center!
