Werkstatthof University of the Arts Redesign of the open spaces of the Zwischenhof II (workshop courtyard)

The project for the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK for short) comprises the renovation and redesign of the outdoor facilities in Courtyard II with the participatory involvement of users. The listed building was rebuilt after war damage in 1945 and is considered the university's main building.



The renovated Hof II is also known as the Werkstatthof. The ground floor of the building houses workshops and studios, which also use the outdoor areas for work and events. The workshop courtyard is to be redesigned to increase the quality of stay in the courtyard and meet the needs of the users.



The concept envisages a linear connection between green spaces and paved areas that are arranged at right angles to the existing buildings. The elongated area is divided into two outdoor work areas for the workshops, an access zone for material deliveries, a fire department access road and the adjacent planting areas.



The workstations are provided with a water and electricity supply and supplemented with technical equipment such as lighting and separators. Robust concrete blocks in two heights were placed on the work areas. The traffic area is made of paving stones from recycled material. The different formats, which are arranged linearly, disappear playfully into the green areas. The vegetation areas are also upgraded and the tree population is supplemented with shade-tolerant plants at different heights.
