Leipzig needs a new skate park! Local roller sports enthusiasts have been calling for this for years, because compared to other major cities, there was a lack of a larger skate park for the constantly growing scene. In the Grünau district, GFSL developed a skate park as a contemporary urban open space for a variety of uses. The focus is on the 2,000 m² skate park course built in in-situ concrete. It is designed in accordance with Olympic standards and can be used by athletes on skateboards, inline skates and BMX bikes as well as those in wheelchairs.
Set in a green passe-partout, the skate park blends into the park-like surroundings and integrates the valuable tree population. The result is a new park landscape in which there is also space for other uses, such as streetball, calisthenics and table tennis. The barrier-free paths are perfect for strolling without any action and there are numerous places to relax, such as the Chill Hill. The entire park is drained into the ground via two drainage channels. The reinforced, 15 cm thick layer of shotcrete, which is partly smoothed by hand, acts as a temporary water reservoir in the event of heavy rainfall.
The facility, which was completed in 2022, received recognition as part of the Saxon State Prize for Building Culture 2022 and was nominated for the German Landscape Architecture Prize 2023. In November 2023, the project was awarded the City of Leipzig Architecture Prize.
