Since the baroque expansion of the Neumarkt, the site of the Altes Gewandhaus was no longer built on, but became part of the square. After considerations for a redevelopment in the 2000s did not lead to success, the Dresden City Council decided to transform the area into a green square after a public discussion. The concept takes up the history of the site and develops the idea of a hybrid that is both a square and a green space.
