The company was founded in 1908 as "Chemische Fabrik Budenheim Utz und Hensel". As early as 1924, by which time the company had specialized in the production of phosphates and related products, the food manufacturer Dr. Oetker acquired a stake in the company. In the 1950s, the neighbouring oil factory was taken over, extending the Rhine frontage to 485 metres.

With the constant modernization of the production processes, new production facilities and buildings were created, so that the image of the chemical factory was subject to constant change. After the destruction of the Mainz administrative headquarters in the war, it was relocated to Budenheim, where it moved into a new administrative building from 1963.
The open spaces were characterized by extensive spaced greenery. A sufficient number of parking spaces and usable open spaces had not yet played a role in the 1960s planning.

Today, a good hundred years after its foundation, the company is one of the world market leaders in phosphate production and employs 670 people. With the redesign of the open spaces, it presents itself as a cosmopolitan, modern company. This commitment and the design were awarded the prize for landscape architecture in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, the Gottfried Kühn Prize, in 2009.
