Natur-Park Schöneberger Südgelände - Festival of Lights © 2011 Holger Koppatsch
After the Berlin-Tempelhof marshalling yard was closed down, nature reclaimed the site. Today, the southern area is home to a variety of rare and endangered animals and plants.
Thanks to the efforts of many citizens and the financial support of the Allianz Environmental Foundation, the enchanted place was made accessible to the public.
The nature park was "Worldwide Project" of the EXPO 2000 and is under nature and landscape protection.
The Natur-Park Südgelände is characterized by a fascinating combination of
nature, railway relics and art. The visitor is guided along paths and footbridges that follow the course of old railway lines. Thus, the area can be experienced on rails, so to speak. The artistic concept comes from the sculpture group ODIUS.
The nature park is intended to serve the quiet recreation. For intensive leisure and sports activities, one can use the Hans-Baluschek-Park on the other side of the S-Bahn.
