The regional park area is characterised by a varied spatial sequence of the Elbe valley and flat marsh as well as the distinctive geest slope of the terminal moraine and the slightly undulating geest. Accordingly, a colourful mosaic of different landscapes and sceneries characterises the experience value of the planning area. In addition to the particularly attractive banks of the Elbe, the focus is placed on the less spectacular landscape areas, which are attractive due to their special natural features with forests, moorland and heathland, smaller bodies of water and cultural landscapes characterised by bends.

Due to its natural beauty and diversity, the planning area is highly attractive for landscape-related recreational activities such as hiking, cycling, horseback riding and water sports. The banks of the Elbe form an important point of reference as the 'Maritime Mile' and the course of the river Wedeler Au represents the connecting element of the different cultural landscapes.

As a superordinate open space for half-day and full-day recreation, the regional park represents an offer for residents of the nearby surroundings from the western and northern areas of the Hamburg metropolitan region. The main target groups are walkers and hikers, cyclists and skaters, joggers and walkers, and horseback riders. A distinction is made between areas for quiet recreation geared towards enjoying nature and active zones as focal areas for leisure and recreation infrastructure. Different approaches for action for regional park measures were derived from identified points of conflict, depending on the focus.
The framework concept developed contains expert proposals and individual recommendations for the groups of measures: Qualification of recreational paths and facilities, strengthening of nature and landscape, and anchoring of cultural and regional historical identities.

With the founding of the Wedeler Au Regional Park Association in 2009, which is made up of representatives of the participating municipalities and administrations, the administrative prerequisites for the gradual implementation of the concept were created.
This is being done with funds from various funding sources with the municipalities' own contribution.
As a first step, an area-wide wayfinding system was developed and the signposting on site was tackled. In addition, the attractiveness and the offer structure for recreation are improved by selective redesign measures and the preconditions for biotope development are optimised. Comprehensive public relations work and a wide-ranging 'participation programme' managed by the regional park association will anchor the valorisation of and attachment to the landscape area in the population.
